Architectural Colorimetry & Cross-Brand Matching Methodology

PaintColorMatcher.com was engineered to solve the two biggest failures in consumer paint apps: uncalibrated smartphone white-balance drift and naive RGB distance matching that ignores human undertone perception.

01 • CIE ΔE 2000 & CAM16-UCS Dual Space

Why We Never Use Simple RGB Distance

Human vision is non-uniform: our eyes are far more sensitive to subtle shifts in warm vs cool gray undertones than raw RGB numbers suggest. Every cross-brand match on PaintColorMatcher is computed using the ISO/CIE 11664-6 (CIEDE2000) formula with parametric weights (kL=1, kC=1, kH=1) and verified in CAM16-UCS uniform color appearance space.

02 • 2-Step Bradford CAT16 White-Point Calibration

Stripping 2700K Indoor Bulb Cast from Photos

When you photograph an interior wall at night or under warm LED lamps, the camera sensor records the combined product of the lamp spectrum and paint reflectance. By tapping a known white reference (such as baseboard trim or ceiling paint) in our Photo Matcher, we compute a 2-step Bradford Chromatic Adaptation Transform (CAT16) back to standard D65 daylight.

03 • Helmholtz-Kohlrausch (H-K) Perceived Lightness

Beyond Standard LRV (Light Reflectance Value)

Standard LRV measures physical luminance reflectance (CIE Y), but high-chroma colors appear brighter to the human brain due to the Helmholtz-Kohlrausch effect. We publish both official LRV and Fairchild-Pirrotta H-K perceived lightness (L*HK) on every swatch sheet.
